The shell, called the peridium, is smooth and leathery and white (sometimes cream). The pulp has a gelatinous shape and is characterized by a rare smell.
During maturation, the peridium breaks into 2-3 parts (about a week after the egg grows). A fruiting body sprouts from the egg, which is represented by a stalk-like cylindrical receptacle, hollow inside and with spongy walls of yellow or white color. The body size is 12-25 cm in height (sometimes up to 30 cm) and 2-4 cm in width.
At the top of the leg there is a bell-shaped cap, 4-5 cm high. The cap has a cellular surface and is covered with a dark olive-colored mucous glebe. On top of the cap there is a dense disk with a hole. The spores have a size of 3.5-5 by 1.5-2 microns, a smooth surface, an ellipsoidal-cylindrical shape and a yellowish color. A distinctive feature of a mature mushroom is the unpleasant smell of rot and carrion, which is very strong.
Most sources indicate another feature of the Veselka - its growth rate, which is the fastest in nature and reaches 5 mm per minute! According to this indicator, the unusual organism is ahead of the famous record holder for growth - bamboo. It turns out that a full-fledged mushroom can grow, as they say, before our eyes, in just 15-30 minutes, but it doesn’t “live” for long, only 2-3 days.
Where does Veselka grow?
Before you go in search of a miracle cure for all diseases, you should clearly know what the mushroom looks like, since it can be confused with the inedible variety Hadriana.

- the mucous membrane contains colorless, ellipse-shaped, elongated spores;
- the leg is white or yellowish, up to 4 cm thick, reaches 22 cm in length, cylindrical in shape, hollow inside, loose structure, with a volva at the base (remains of an egg);
- the pulp is whitish, spongy.
Another distinctive feature of the fungus is the extremely unpleasant and very strong smell inherent in the fungus, which attracts insects, which subsequently spread its spores.
Distribution and fruiting season
The Far East, the Caucasus, Siberia, and Central Europe are the distribution area of the common moth. Here the fungus can be found in shrubs or deciduous woodlands, where it is capable of creating mycorrhizae with beech or oak. But most often, exhibiting the properties of a saprophyte, the common vesel forms small colonies or grows in single specimens directly on the soil, preferring soil rich in humus. Similar species and how to distinguish them from them
The most similar to the common vesel is the conditionally edible Hadrian's vesel (Phallus hadriani). It can be found on sandy soils, in the dunes of the Baltic coast and in climatic and soil conditions approaching desert ones. At the egg stage, the shell of the fruiting body is pink and has an elongated shape. The mycelium strands are red-violet or bright pink. The cuticle of the cap is lilac in color, the disc at its apex has a reddish fringe. The stem of the mushroom is up to 18 cm high and 8 cm thick, tapering towards the base.
Another double of the common moth is the double dictyophora (Phallus duplicatus), or networt. Despite the similarity in color and texture of the cuticle, the dictyophora has the main difference: a clearly visible white openwork “skirt” descending from under the cap, completely enveloping the leg and making its outline barrel-shaped. Thanks to the presence of this “detail,” the mushroom has another, very poetic name - “veiled lady.” Dictyophora is an edible mushroom of the fourth category, it is rare and is listed in the Red Book of Russia and Ukraine.
