Gold medal of judoka Khasan Khalmurzaev

Judoka Khsan Khalmurzaev added to the gold medals of the Russian national team by defeating the American Travis Stevens at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Vasily Titov, President of the Artistic Gymnastics Federation of Russia:

Of course, I believed in the guys! But it is extremely difficult to compete with the Japanese in freestyle. But what our guys did - they are great. We will continue to fight, there are still individual events ahead, all-around. But what they have already done is an amazing result, well done guys. They gathered today, they were very confident, and this is very nice. ("R-Sport")

In Penza, at the Burtasy Sports Palace, the Russian Artistic Gymnastics Cup ended. According to its results, the head coach of the national team Andrei Rodionenko named the names of those who will take to the platform in Rio de Janeiro. Men: Denis Ablyazin, Nikolai Kuksenkov, David Belyavsky, Nikita Ignatiev and Nikita Nagorny, substitutes - Ivan Stretovich and Vladislav Polyashov. Women: Aliya Mustafina, Angelina Melnikova, Maria Paseka, Daria Spiridonova, Seda Tutkhalyan.

From the point of view of the formation of the composition, the Penza competitions were not decisive, since the composition of the national team was determined by the results of three qualifying tournaments - the Russian Championship, the European Championship and the Russian Cup. But still, some adjustments were made by the coaching staff after this start.

“The girls had five candidates identified in advance. Here the question was not even with specific names, but with their state of health. We are talking about Afanasyeva and Mustafina. The body must withstand three weeks in the Olympic rhythm. Here with Afanasyeva, it is only becoming clear whether she can. Therefore, the spares are both Afanasyeva and Lilia Akhaimova, there is also Natalya Kapitonova in the reserve, ”Rodionenko told reporters.

And the winners of the Cup of the country were Melnikova and Kuksenkov. For Kuksenkov, the current tournament is also notable for the fact that on the days of the competition, the International Gymnastics Federation received a long-awaited decision to close his "meldonium case" by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). So now nothing interferes with the preparation of an athlete for the Olympic Games.

“Of course, the whole story was debilitating,” Nikolai admitted. - When the International Federation lifted the restrictions and allowed me to speak at the European Championships, it became easier, but, you know, it was necessary to wait for the final decision on the issue. The results that I showed in Penza are not yet as high as we would like. We need to work on the quality of performance. There is no need to complicate programs. If you look at Japanese gymnasts, they have an optimal basic difficulty of 6.5-6.6, with a very high performance. And some gymnasts climb to seven-point levels and end up with low marks. For this, the Cup of Russia is needed to once again test your strength.

As NI already reported, Belyavsky missed the tournament, and another all-around master Nagorny suffered the flu on the eve of the start and decided to participate in the competition literally the day before departure. Naturally, illness and a forced break in training affected the performance. After the first day of competition in the individual all-around, Nagorny was in the lead, but on the second day he participated out of competition and passed only three shells.

“There is still a cough, it’s hard to breathe,” he explained. - The day before departure, I felt good at training, so we decided that I would go to the Cup, I would compete. On the first day, he showed that in any position you need to do everything at the level. And then the coaches forbade me, although I was just torn, I really wanted to speak. I wanted to assert myself a little."

But the world champion, silver and bronze medalist of the 2012 Games in London Ablyazin is gradually gaining his former condition. True, he also fell ill, which prevented him from showing his maximum in the exercise on the rings - here Denis took second place, losing to Ignatiev, but the victory in the freestyle and in the vault was, as they say, unconditional.

“I didn’t have enough strength on the rings due to a cold, they didn’t count the element,” Ablyazin said. - Everything else is fine. I showed my Olympic program here, I will not change anything. On the rings, everything will depend on strength, it will return - there will be rings. It's a question of time. Before Rio, of course, they will have time to return.

In the women's competition, Mustafina finished the competition ahead of schedule, speaking only in the all-around, so Melnikova divided the gold medals among themselves - she left the victory on the beam, Pasika - vault, Kapitonova - uneven bars and Akhaimova - floor exercises.

The most experienced of the participants in the finals, the world champion and bronze medalist of the London Olympics, Paseka, although she became the best in her signature apparatus, admitted to reporters that she was dissatisfied with herself.

“The coaches said that at the Games I would only be in eighth place with such a jump. I'm not in the right shape to perform great, I'm not ready yet. But everything will be fine by Rio!” the gymnast promised.

The Russian women's gymnastics team won the silver medal of the Olympic Games in the team all-around. This success is doubly valuable because the team showed the maximum possible. It was a performance without a single margin for error.

Where it's thin - even if it doesn't break

Unlike the Russian men's team, which yesterday demonstrated a real monolith, our women's team was more like a thin film - the one that is ready to break at any moment. The main intrigue of today's final was precisely this - will it break or not? If not, with a high degree of probability there may be medals (silver or bronze). If it breaks - the end, there is no one to insure.

Our women's team is , Angelina Melnikova, and .

There are no other healthy Olympic-level gymnasts in the country. At home, due to injuries, those who could significantly strengthen the national team remained: Victoria Komova(apparently, finally leaving the sport), Ksenia Afanasyeva and Maria Kharenkova.

What can we expect today? Only that all the girls will perform to the maximum, without a single breakdown. There are no world-class stars on all shells in the team. There is still a great one, but beaten-broken, capable of pulling out any exercise on its veins, there are with excellent bars, there is with a world-class vault. The rest follow them.

It was with such thoughts that the special correspondent of the Championship came to the Rio Olympic Arena. After yesterday's men's starts, it was obvious that the stadium would again not be completely filled, although the hosts and their coach Alexander Alexandrov(ex-mentor of the Russian women's team and personally Aliya Mustafina in London 2012, as you remember), taking the favor of the judges as assistants, they could claim something serious.

Indeed, even 10 minutes before the start, the arena looked like this.

Then, in fairness, people pulled themselves up, but the empty chairs were still visible to the naked eye. And let's be honest - in the gymnastic competitions of the Olympic Games, this is called in one word: shame. This should not be.

USA - like the USSR and Romania rolled into one

Before the start, a large scoreboard showed the historical performances of gymnasts - those who last received the highest score of 10 points. The final video was from a Romanian Lavinia Milosovichi, which once again made me think about time and decay: the great Romanian gymnastics team, which made a rustle for about 40 years, did not even get to the Olympics.

The Americans are now making a noise - in fact, this is such a combined team of the Soviet Union and Romania rolled into one 30 years ago. That is, no competition. It was hard to imagine that this should have happened in the final, so that the United States, led by an incredible Simone Biles were left without victory.

Actually, I will say right away: nothing of the kind happened. It simply could not happen, given the almost complete absence of weaknesses in the US team. The Americans both took the lead from the first rotation, and did not give it up. Q.E.D. But these were other people's pleasures. And we were interested in the struggle for silver-bronze, where the Chinese, Russians, Japanese and English women clashed. Two seats for four contenders.

Mustafina confirmed her greatness

And here, probably, it's time to once again state the greatness of Aliya Mustafina. A year ago, after the European Games in Baku, I wrote a text in which I spoke about the most serious struggle in the life of our star -. Only the great ones win this fight, the rest only delay the defeat. today delayed this defeat forever. Now she has definitely entered into eternity. Among those who many years later will be shown on the big scoreboard of the Olympic Games of the future.

Mustafina understood that she could not be mistaken. Only small blots are the edge. This, if you think about it, is a fantastic burden - to understand that there is no one to turn your shoulder to. Before each projectile, she waited a few seconds, sighed deeply - and went into battle. So, as in the case of floor exercises under "Moscow Nights".

Silver: how it was

And now for the story - how we won our medal. It all started with bars - the strongest exercise for our girls. Angelina Melnikova, and performed very well, creating a good base for further hopes. Rivals for medals, in turn, made a decent mistake.

Floor exercise. Objectively, the weakest point of the Russian team. Melnikova, Tutkhalyan, Mustafina. Everyone did well. Not without mistakes, but also without failures.

Before the last projectile, the Russian team was in fourth place. It's OK. The USA could no longer catch up, China - unless one of them failed, but Japan could and should be fought - their balance beam exercises are not the strongest. There is every chance that ours will win back the gap on their vault ... I can imagine what was going on in the souls of Melnikova, Mustafina and Pasika, who were walking back and forth in anticipation of a call. Especially at Pasika - she could not help but understand that the current world champion in this projectile is simply obliged to show her maximum.

And it happened! Our three girls were flawless, Chinese Mao Yi I made a gross mistake in floor exercises, we predictably overtook the Japanese women ... Silver medal!

Where thin - there is not torn. Thanks, girls! That was great.
